Kung-Fu Shoes: In the Nude

Having covered just about every color in the rainbow and then some, let us turn now to the latest fashion trend circling red carpets and walkways alike: nude shoes.  At first I was skeptical of flesh toned footwear and thought it might make the feet look took naked and throw off a whole outfit.  However, when I began scoping sites for styles to fill up this guide, I realized that they are far more practical than I gave them credit for.  When heading into the office, sometimes the last thing on your mind is slipping on a pair of amazing pumps – after all, Iron Fist graphics may not be suitable for all corporate audiences.  Though color is always encouraged when coordinating a stellar ensemble, the addition of a nude shoe could very well prevent distraction from a flawless makeup job or perfectly coiffed curls.  Finally, depending on the shape, finish and even application, nude will become the new black, or pink, or whatever it is the kids are wearing these days.

Imitations may exist, but none can duplicate the quality of Pleaser and their Tattoo Print Pumps, which have a creamy background that has been covered in anchors, keys, swallows and stars.  The interior is a lovely shade of red, though personally I would remove the satin bows and likely relocate them to my hair.

+

Black lace surrounds a nude satin base to form Bordello’s Beauty, a Victorian style kitten heel ankle boot that may very well carry frills and flowers to project an image of femininity, but only the imagination limits the number of ways the boots can be combined with other articles of clothing.

+

Death’s Head moths surrounded by hearts, flowers and broken mesh are just the beginning of why I am infatuated with Iron Fist’s Lovelace Heels.  A pouf of tulle sits atop the peep toe while a black satin ribbon ties around your ankle to strap you into five and half inches of platformed glory, where you are ready for whatever adventure the evening may offer.

+

Though the tone of Jeffrey Campbell’s Lisa Marie is slightly more tan than taupe, there is something about the silhouette that piqued my interest straight away.  Upon closer inspection, the golden studs, toe cap and vertical plates on the back strap are all details which make this high heeled boot anything but ordinary.

+

Two of Jeffrey Campbell’s signature styles have been combined to form the sleek and sexy Foxy Nite; the Foxy t-bar upper is set on the Night Walk base and both have been covered in soft nude suede.  Ideally these would be worn with those essential soft chiffon Summer dresses, denim shorts and a tank top, or even with your favorite swimsuit.

+

Create a lasting impression with Betsey Johnson’s Makenna, a slingback style peep toe platform in a blushing nude patent that has an adjustable heel strap accented by a gold buckle, and subtle leopard print interior.

+

The blush hued nude patent straps, over-sized buckle and spiked wedge are all elements that make Betsey Johnson’s Morggann your sole mate for the Summer, combining simple structure with edgy details to give you a versatile shoe that will stand out yet not take over your outfit.

+

On the paler end of the spectrum one can find Regan, a platform sandal with plenty of attitude by Penny Sue that features a sculpted heel, gold spikes studded along straps and a back zippy that makes them easy to put on or take off.

+

Advertised as a “must have neutral”, Cannes by Just Fabulous has a chic open toe nude patent upper and a geometric woven pattern on the platformed heel which will give your feet a ‘light’ and ‘airy’, especially while lounging in a garden sipping ice cold home made lemonade; vodka optional.

+

Rumored to be inspired by Ivanka Trump, Eris from Kelsi Dagger is said to be able to make one feel like a million bucks, with caged straps as the upper made from polished beige patent, an elastic heel strap which allows for the right fit, and a platform that elevates you above the rest of the peasants.

+

Though it may seem a bit demure compared to some of the other styles presented here, Gwost by Guess has cutout details along beige leather that wraps your foot in natural comfort.  The wooden heel and platform continue that organic feel, and the open toe design ensures you can wear it no matter how warm the weather gets.

+

For fans of casual street wear, Ego and Greed offers Detroit, a sneaker with an old school shape, thick black rubber sole that allegedly “gets more awesome with age”, and patches held on by small circular gold studs.  Whether you are dressing down or getting ready to rock out, one should definitely have at least one pair of sneakers that are going to withstand endless hours of stomping to your favorite band or long nights wandering sidewalks of your favorite city.

Kung-Fu Shoes: See Spot Strut

There is something about the repetition of circles on a solid background that I find gleeful, as they add immediate interest to garments and accessories alike while invoking a variety of influences, some of which have been explored here in the past.  While some trends come and go, this one seems to remain prominent among contemporary fashions from the runway to street wear.  Personally I have yet to acquire a much coveted pair of polka dot shoes, though my aim is to find ones that not only can be easily incorporated into my wardrobe, but also offer comfort with long-term wear.  If all else fails, one could potentially create a stencil and add their own spots to their favorite pair of shoes, though I would suggest some practice before attacking footwear and making a mess instead of art.

The sparse dots on Iron Fist’s Faunarama Wedge are accented by a bright turquoise halo that matched the print on the platform which depicts darling does, skulls, bunnies and bows, with a contrasting brilliant red interior that has been infected by smaller dots; a buckled strap with dangling skull charm keeps these babies on your feet while you are out and about.

+

Another example of how polka dots don’t always have to be the center of attention, Posey is a great lace up platform boot with soft pink background covered in kisses, blue plants and plenty of skulls and cross bones.  The black and white polka dot print packs a punch to the heel and platform, as well as trims a few of the boots curves.

+

Break out of mundane fashion ‘rules’ with the eye-popping Lolita Love, a hybrid of bold polka dots and realistic leopard print .  The large red flower is removable and perhaps could find a home in your favorite hairstyle, while the leopard print bow and secret interior illustrations are nice details not to be overlooked.

+

Unexpected style strikes again where Lounge Days takes the Society Suicide print and mixes it with the same bold white and black polka dots we saw on the boot above.  This time dainty touches such as a matching bow, buckle ankle strap and skull charm along with a rounded toe and open top accentuate your feet, while a black and turquoise striped interior pulls all of the colors together.

+

Here we have the original Society Suicide platform pump in all of its dazzling satin beauty, a floral print standing out against the black background. Though it might be difficult to see in this profile photo, there is a polka dot strap that reaches across the foot and ends in the big bow on the side.

tuk-ink-polka-dot-ruffle-wedge

The Ink Polka Ruffle Wedge from T.U.K. is an innovated design for alternative fashion fans, featuring a black leather peep toe upper placed on a polka dot pedestal, ruffled detail along the top and bows accenting the vamp as well as the back heel.

+

Though it consists of only two pairs at the moment, my Red Shoe Collection is something I take pride in because I enjoy having quality shoes that can really set an outfit off, and these are currently at the top of my Must Have List.  An updated Bordello style, the Big Easy is six inches of red and white polka dot beauty, a Mary Jane strap finishing off the top and ensuring your security for an adventurous evening.

+

Cure those Winter blues by planning your Spring wardrobe around retro and vintage themes, which can be done with a snazzy little number named Shelly.  Surprisingly the design comes from Paris Hilton, which does not deter from the sophisticated polka dots on a peep toe pump that is set atop five inches of cork, a double-stacked bow accenting the vamp.

+

Simply deceptive, these black and yellow pump are a collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama, where the choice of a perky primary produces distinct difference against the daring dark LV logo printed along the pump, which has been set off nicely with a patent vinyl polka dot bow.

+

Hailed as a long time icon of alternative footwear, Dr. Marten never ceases to amaze and presents this delightful pair of Pink Polka Dot Boots, the candy pink color nicely set off by black eyelets and laces.

+

A hodgepodge of four different types of polka dots in various color combinations, this peep toe wedge sandal by Pierre Hardy is not your average discount shoe store reject, but rather the future of fashionable footwear that comes with a high price tag.

+

At first glance this shoe may seem like a lot to take in, but I simply love Aphrodite by Irregular Choice, footwear that was certainly made to feel anyone feel like a deity.  The platform is covered in a navy polka dot fabric accented by matching patent bows and trimmed with red piping.  The open toe leads to a cage style toe, where a cushion of red and white polka dot are waiting to spoil your feet.  The suede heel and metallic snake skin type interior round out the details that make this a truly fantastic shoe.  On the bottom is the real surprise, where you will find a turquoise wallpaper of tridents and flowers offset an illustration of a mermaid riding a seahorse.  These are perhaps the most decadent pair in this guide, but all are equally easy to wear when coordinated with the right dose of confidence!

Kung-Fu Shoes: Back 2 Black

Having covered just about every other hue in the color spectrum, it seems appropriate to write about something a bit more basic, that being the complete absence of color.  Black is more commonly associated with various subcultures, the most prominent of which are ‘goths’ and the ‘beatniks’ before them.  Since I am not very fond of labels except when it comes to identifying myself, I will focus on the reasons why I find black appealing.  Being a strong neutral, it coordinates well with other earth tones and lends contrast to bright primary or secondary colors.  Some feel it should be a wardrobe staple in order to indicate their alliance to a specific genre and there may have been a time where I was guilty of that myself.  However I have now come to use black as a base to build a fabulous outfit upon, particularly when pairing it with red [my favorite color] and accessories that add texture but not bulk.

In Johnny Cash’s aptly titled song Man In Black, the lyrics explain that “I wear the black for the poor and beaten down; the sick and lonely old; in mournin’ for the lives that could have been; the thousands that who have died” among many other reasons.  Though there is a somber tone to the words and the meaning behind wearing black, this song is a reminder that it has often been used in mourning of losing a loved one, particularly in Victorian times.  Having said that though, I do find that it often gets tiring when people assume the purpose behind a black ensemble is to invoke images of death, as the color can be slimming when applied in the right areas and even offers warmth when soaking up rays of sun.  Black footwear apparently now carries connotations of fetish gear and makes the wearer a dominatrix, which is just about as ridiculous as assuming everyone who wears black is ‘goth’.  Though your clothes can certainly say a lot about you, always make sure that your personality comes through so that everyone knows you are not another stereotype, but rather a fierce fashionista creating a statement they will pay attention to.

+++

From the front, Rock & Republic’s Loretta may seem like just another black pump.  However, when turned around, there is a corset style lacing that goes down the back of the heel.  Combined with the leather of the pump itself, a pointed toe and 4 3/4 inches of height, there will undoubtedly be many questions of where you got those shoes when you enter a room where everyone else is in the same old heels.

+

Nothing about Singapore indicates that it is an Ed Hardy design, except for maybe the letter insignia on either side of the vamp and the snarling tiger illustration on the lining.  The black patent peep toe pump is also accented with silver and black zippers that enhance the curves of the shoe, making it sleek and sexy without a tons of bells and whistles.

+

Set the fashion bar high and let your status be known with Ramma by Betsey Johnson, a black leather peep toe pump decorated with a heavy dose of glitter, two rows of spikes and a hint of animal print on the inside of the stiletto.

+

If that last style leaves you wanting more, Letona delivers with a wedge that tops out at six inches, the black leather accented by a strip of chunky glitter and spikes on the back, with a surprise leopard print lining.

+

Usually Iron Fist is known for stunning artwork in bold colors that wrap a shoe in graphic imagery that might make one think twice about actually wearing it outside, but the Ruff Rider seen here is a simple synthetic leather peep toe platform where the details are what stand out.  Sequins clustered together form skulls, while there is a zipper on the out step which actually functions, and more zipper trim along a faux tongue that sticks out over the peep toe, accented with silver studs.

+

Tucked between the multiple black straps of Lounge Leopard are spots and tattoo style flowers which add a nice bit of surprise when these black booties are being taken off.  The gold hooks in front bring a shiny element that one can match jewelry and other accessories too.

+

Don’t adjust your computer screen folks, Lace Up by Jeffrey Campbell is a heelless platform that not only has interesting cutouts on the sides, but is also decorated with dozens of silver grommets that give the 6 1/4 inch shoe it’s name.

+

Smile like a crocodile in Rocksrping, gorgeous shiny and scaled platforms with two thick crossed buckle straps that should keep you securely in these shoes as you dance the night away.

+

If you are hopelessly addicted to Jeffrey Campell’s stunning designs, you might have to check yourself into the Clinic where futuristic footwear is a must.  Forged from black calf, these babies have a definite industrial vibe, what with the closed toe, silver buckled straps and steel plates secured to the 5″ platforms that will assist you in stomping to techno beats.

+

Rock major attitude with Tick Chain, which takes the legendary Tick shape and adds a layer of heavy metal chain at the top that swishes back and forth ensuring that those who pass by will know you are not to be trifled with.

+

Of course if you love JC’s Tick then you will go mad for its lovely and luscious cousin Jesmeen, reported as being the “younger and hotter” version of a design that has become synonymous with the label.  That heavily studded heel is easily recognizable, though up top is pleated leather with a baby strap, making these both flirty and fun especially when paired with brightly colored opaque tights.

+

Taking you to higher and better places than ever before, Slash Low has similar elements to another style [Slash TK] though this version grazes the ankle and has blend of straps that stretch across the solid black pebbled leather back heel.

Kung-Fu Shoes: Turquoise Poise

Though no longer officially a part of Carny Style, Kung-Fu Shoes remains a popular article and will continue to be posted once a month under the broader Fashion category that I recently added to the blog.  This way I can write about all the ridiculous and wonderful shoes out there without having to find a way to relate them to what I consider to be Circus Couture.  There are also new categories for Hair, Makeup and Bath & Body, all of which are regularly updated with articles that discuss the latest products from companies that I support in one way or another.

In color psychology, turquoise regulates emotion to create balance and stability.  Being a combination of blue and a small amount of yellow, it emits the harmony, serenity and tranquility of blue, along with the inspirational vitality of yellow.  This is a color that can revitalize your spirit during moments of fatigue and alleviate feelings of loneliness by generating calmness then offering a shot of invigoration.  Turquoise is great to have around in an emergency because it can aid in sharp thinking and decision-making, while also supporting the growth of organizational and management skills.  The hue gives control over speech and expression, building confidence and allowing you to have clear thoughts when addressing the public.  It has been said that turquoise has the ability to amplify levels of ingenuity or help build self-esteem, though there is a risk of becoming arrogant and narcissistic.

+++

Starting this style guide off strong with Iron Fist’s Ruff Rider Combat Boot because they are said to “show off your wild party girl side” and I have no shame endorsing such behavior.  These glitzy turquoise boots are covered with silver sequin skulls accented by studs, and while they lace up, there is also a zipper on the side to easily slip them on.  A one inch block heel also adds a bit of lift without the scariness of a stiletto.

+

A modern interpretation of what I would call ‘ugly shoes’ as a kid, Bunnys Boat is a stylish flat with eyelets, hot pink stitching and patent bow that help keep them on trend instead of being the embarrassing things your father buys at the thrift store.

+

If you are struggling with the question of Love Me Love Me Not, stop plucking petals and hit the town with these rose and anchor printed flats.  The bright colors and bold designs are sure to turn heads, while polka dot piping, matching bow and a black interior  that is splattered with a galaxy of crossed bones, hearts with bows and grinning skulls with bowlers strike up appreciation for artistic footwear.

+

In a dream you are stumbling through towering aisles of boring brown boxes, each containing square shoes in neutral shades that are too small.  Frantically throwing one box after the next to the floor, you are ready to cry out in anguish when your eye catches something in the distance.  Wading through the catastrophe you created, X Marks The Spot where you discover an amazing treasure.  The silhouette of a pump has been wrapped in turquoise leopard print and trimmed with layers of multi color sequins, a black vinyl strip of square studs snaking across the toe.

+

Of course if you desire a more dramatic dose of fierce footwear, you can always go for the X Marks the Spot Platform Boot, which features leopard print satin, 5 1/2 inch  heel and 1 1/2 inch platform, both of which are decked out in sparkling sequins.  The treads on the bottoms help you grip the sidewalk when you are stomping through fallen leaves, and I am enamored by this style because I feel it really defines me as Jersey Girl – tacky, loud and unapologetic.

+

Once you have reached that proverbial ‘X’, you dig deep to find the Treasure Box, a wild leopard print wedge with a black cuff that displays an array of multi color sequins.  Though it is the third style which uses the same elements, that does not detract from the fact that it is a visually gripping shoe and will surely standout among the standard shoes one sees during the colder months.

+

Simple yet stunning, this classic silhouette from Bordello is a shoe that every fashionista needs in their collection!  The lavish turquoise satin of Biggest Little City is covered in a collection of glittering rhinestones which really set off the 5 3/4 inch heel, ideal for a flirty pinup shoot or sophisticated burlesque routine.

+

These round toe pumps by Michael Antonio are perfect for everyday where, as they can easily shift from day to night or work to play with the right styling.   The metallic pattern on Love Me is reminiscent of a reptile and adds some edge to the 4 1/2 inch heel.

+

The edgy Gidget Wedge has turquoise straps contrasted by a black five-inch platform, along with square studs and a sturdy strap that should appeal to those  who want a bit of rocker chic in their wardrobe.

+

Sweetheart cutouts, a buckled ankle strap and thick platform are all details that will make you fall in love with Cuffed by Jeffrey Campbell.  Obsession will run high over this six-inch metallic turquoise platform heel which is as romantic as it is rebellious.

+

Zigzag detailing is combined with clear plastic trim to create the weirdly awesome Audrey 2, a suede pointed toe platform wedge with ankle strap that will add the right amount of quirk to your outfit.

+

Have no fear, the snake part of these Maritza Platform Block Heels is completely synthetic and therefore should give you no qualms about rocking outrageous footwear if you are an animal lover.

+++

Turquoise is the color of the evolved soul and allows you to empathize with others, while also containing strong powers of observation.  This can be utilized to identify the way to success by balancing the pros and cons of any situation, allowing for solid decision-making.  Sometimes it is capable of being impractical and idealistic, appearing excessively calm, cool and collected.  Too much may give you an over excited mind and generate emotional imbalance, while too little may cause you to hold back your emotions which can result in bewilderment about your direction in life.

Kung Fu-Shoes: Violent Violet

What separates purple from violet is that the latter is present in the visible light spectrum, and the other is the product of mixing red with blue.  The color violet can motivate ones inner self-love, incites innovation and does it all without  building up the ego.  Violet brings harmony not only to your spiritual side but to your sense of style as well – it is a favorable hue for artists, musicians and writers in particular.  If incorporating a bit of enlightenment and a consciousness of modesty seems old-fashioned, violet is also indicative of being a distinguished individual who is motivated by creativity.  Utilize it to add ambiguity to any outfit, because in the sideshow one always keeps the audience guessing as it is far more entertaining than making an attempt to explain what they don’t really want to understand.

Emulate the sophisticated couture glamour of  silver-screen starlets with an added touch of modern flair with these decadent Pleaser pumps aptly named Deluxe, which come from their Day and Night collection.  Vibrantly violet suede is punctuated with glistening rhinestones for a lavish ankle-hugging peep toe upper, while the heel metallic platforms are inspired by architecture aesthetics.  Wear them with sheer vertical stripe stockings for an added touch of cabaret style elegance.

Of course one can always go straight for the opulence with a satin based platform pump that is drenched in glittering rhinestones.  While it may seem more fitting to wear these on stage for an unforgettable burlesque performance, it is entirely acceptable and in my opinion a bit more fun to dazzle at moments when it is less expected.  For instance, attending the latest art show in the Birdie Party Dress [black] by Pinup Couture and these shimmering beauties on your feet, it will be difficult for others to ignore your regal status.

Classic pumps do not mean dusty discards at the local thrift store and Waleo is advertised to help one earn their fashion credentials, and violet suede is definitely an update to a style that is occasionally viewed as stale.  Capturing that iconic type of beauty can be easy as slipping on The Original Vamp Dress by Mode Merr, a pair of vintage seamed stockings and the aforementioned shoes.

The downside to suede is that it can be easily ruined by rain or snow, so it should be a Given that having the same pair of shoes in patent leather means that you can still have that pop of color to your favorite black vintage dress.  However, if you are feeling a bit more daring, try them with the Serious Business Suit in Steel Grey, which is Mode Merr‘s interpretation of a traditional men’s suit that is tailored to fit the curves of a more feminine body.

Patterns are always an excellent means of making your footwear standout, especially when dealing with such a volatile color such as violet, because apparently purple is the preferred color to label a large majority of shoes that are definitely a different hue.  Nonetheless, as any good fashion writer would. I used my prior knowledge gained from high school art courses in deducing that both exist on Shoe Republic’s Cheker, which contains both of the aforementioned colors along with white and fuchsia; interlocked they create an appealing optical illusion.

You have woken up to find that you are a secret agent named Malika and your mission is to assemble an outfit to coordinate with ultra violet suede pumps.  Flexible black elastic straps ensure that they will stay on your feet whether collecting intel at a party or kicking ass with the double stacked platforms.

Comfort is something usually sought before and after a performance, but that does not mean one must sacrifice style and satin ballet flats are always a good choice to give feet a break from towering heels.  The pleated details create a point of interest and would go well with a basic black pencil skirt and Jeanie Lurex Top from Pinup Couture in aqua.

Summer is slowly winding down but there is still plenty of time to enjoy ocean breezes, which is made especially refreshing with wedge sandals that  have a minimalism approach to structured straps and light neutral toned wooden wedges for that futuristic flair.  Coordinate a chic pinup style with Pinup Couture’s Sadie Dress in Purple Floral Boarder Print, advertised to be “like a rose garden come to life” and soak up the last of this season’s memorable moments.

Precise lines and a velvety texture set the stage for this stunning peep toe platform wedge, the rich color subtly accented with a leopard print interior.  Before getting pregnant and leaving town with Butch on Zed’s Chopper, Fabiola was a dancing queen and would wear these with the Ava Dress, complimenting her namesake footwear by going for the gold and rocking a vintage styled dress that is flattering on all body types.

Color blocking has become popular in fashion over the past few years and is another way to bring unique elements to the wardrobe without being tacky or over done.  For instance, a peep toe platform wedge sandal is a great canvas for color blocking, and here hues of violet are accented by blue and turquoise elements, a shocking strip of orange and a fuchsia interior that combine to make a work of art.

Dusty trails and shady saloons are settings for rowdy outlaws and tanned cowboys that hardly ever had a place for women, unless they were the damsel in distress type cinched in by corsets and drowning in petticoats.  Not being one for out-dated stereotypes, these Very Volatile Rio Grande boots are all Americana  attitude and carry a badass babe vibe that can be felt for miles.  The smokey violet leather carries a distressed look ideal for a post apocalyptic dance off, complimented by sunset orange details.

It is never too early to be prepared for Winter, particularly if one lives in an area prone to significant amounts of snow fall.  Moncler Boots are made of quilted nylon for layers of warmth and a rubber sole that will prevent you from slipping on icy surfaces.  They work well with jeans and while they might not be the best looking boot, it is better than having frozen feet.

When it comes to envisioning a futuristic inspired fashion, violet proudly represents unlimited inspiration and imagination, stimulating intellect as well as dream activity.  The color is also noted for it individuality, and is best suited for a personality that likewise enjoys doing their own thing.  Other positive qualities of violet include empathy, tolerance and a love of humanity, which are all wonderful ways to invoke emotion through fashion.  There are a few negative aspects to violet, as it is noted to be immature and encourages an idealism based on fantasy.  It can be seen as impractical and cynical, which makes excessive use of the color give off the wrong tone.  This guide will assist you in communicating that you prefer the finer quality in life without sending the message of arrogance.  Of course part of that come from one’s own attitude, because no amount of clothes or accessories can help mask cheap and nasty, but otherwise your compassionate nature will shine forth.

Kung-Fu Shoes: True Blue

The coolest of colors is blue, which can be found painting the sky, ocean, and even sleep.  In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was used to represent heaven, while Christians use blue to represent the Virgin Mary.  A pure hue embodies insight, goodwill and can also have a holistic effect in that it can be quite calming, particularly when used to decorate the home.  Artists use blue to create perspective, as the color gives a feeling of distance and thus allows us to look beyond, accumulating an external viewpoint that is instrumental in articulating your personality through fashion.  Compared to the other colors, blue is overwhelmingly the ‘favorite’, as it is seen as sensible, consistent and dedicated – all qualities that one would certainly hope others saw whether being interviewed or strutting across a stage.  Though generally it perceived as tranquil, electric and brilliant blues become charismatic, striking and charming with an expression of vivacity.  Indigo is a much deeper blue, so it indicates knowledge and is said to increase personal thought and profound insights.  Take caution though, because certain shades or the overuse of the color can come across as cold or uncaring, which is more ideal for a costume which suits that type of character rather than a lively presentation.

Contrary to popular belief, blue is the least gender specific color because it appeals equally to both men and women.  In Chinese culture where colors correspond to the five primary elements, the four seasons and navigational directions, blue is associated with wood, Spring and East.  Paintings of the god Krishna often depict him with blue skin, in Mexico it is a color of mourning, to the Aztecs it symbolized sacrifice, and in Greece it is believed that wearing a blue charm necklace or bracelet would ward off the “evil eye”.  Owls are the only birds who can see this color, mosquitos are likely to be twice as attracted to it compared to other colors, and people are often more productive in blue rooms.  Those who incorporate blue into their wardrobe will find that it looks good in just about any shade and it can aid in self-expression, which is something this guide is definitely full of.

The magnetic qualities of a metallic platform heel is one of the many reasons the Teeze style by Pleaser has such a wide range of designs that can be coordinated with a number of different outfit.  This particular pair of shoes invokes a noble characteristic and would look lovely with a fitted pencil skirt and cleavage enhancing blouse or a sparkling, slinky cocktail dress.

Don’t let anyone step on these blue suede shoes – Belll is Betsey Johnson‘s version of the classic footwear sung about in Elvis Presley’s tune, complete with platform, peep toe and black stiletto heel blasted with studs and spikes.  Rock these with any of Lip Service‘s tartan pieces or items from Widow‘s upcoming Fall line Black Ice , such as the Handkerchief Dress and Ponti Clip Leggings.

If one desires to feel alluring and provocative, try the sophisticated satin of Daelyn, a saucy pump with ankle strap and dazzling ruffled lace that trims the five-inch heel from top to bottom.  A shoe such as this tends to speak for itself, so it would be best paired with a statement piece such as the Army Dress by Living Dead Souls.

There is something oddly appealing about metallic toe and heel caps, particularly when they have heart-shaped cutouts and are mounded on pointy toed blue suede flats, which also have a leopard print lining.  Sadiie is a spectacular shoe designed to slip on and off easily, which will come in handy if you have been out partying until the early morning hours.

Jeffrey Campbell fulfills ever party girl’s dream with Wanted G, a modern silhouette with a dash of flash that is nothing short of eye-catching.  The familiar Mary Jane shape is wrapped in a deep, sparkling blue and topped with a bow that belies its diva attitude.

Described as the “sexy cousin” of Jeffrey Campbell‘s 99 design, the Pixie has the same heel and hidden platform but has a taller bootie with a ‘secret’ zipper in the back.  Succulent blue suede on the outside, leather lining, padded foot bed and a non-skid sole provides a framework to ease feet while you embark on a whirlwind adventure.

One does not have to be intimidated by shoes that have no heels, as they are touted as being more comfortable to walk in than they look.  The blue suede of Shadow Spike is a soft contrast to all of the silver spikes that have been hammered into a shoe fit for a post-apocalyptic warrior queen.

All the piggies go to the Market, then the new bistro that just opened up, that bar you always hit up on a Friday night and maybe even take a stroll through the park at midnight.  No matter what your destination, these velvet platform wedges by Ego and Greed will treat your feet with nothing but the best comfort.

Platforms do not have to be restricted to pumps and wedges – sneakers have received an elevated makeover during the past few years and are appearing in all types of alternative fashions.  The sleek Oxford style upper combined with a contrasting white platform sole of Timmy has silver stud details that don’t go overboard which prevents one from being limited to what can be worn with it.

Cobalt is one of my favorite shades of blue and the Sugar Hiccup platform pumps by Iron Fist are a great example of how the rich hue and studded skull details gives chic style a harder edge.  Wear them to compliment a structured pencil dress such as Spike It, another upcoming Fall item from Lip Service.

Develop an unusual look with these dynamic Haute Tiger Pumps by Ed Hardy – a brilliant blue composes the background for striking embellishments of a roaring tiger’s head surrounded by pink and white cherry blossoms.  Dare to ware them for a pinup contest at a tattoo convention or for an evening of checking out some new art.

For a truly royal look, spoil yourself with blue satin and flocked black flower details, with rivers of encrusted rhinestones running across this peep toe platform ankle boot, which is sure to make you the center of attention for all of the right reasons.

When paired with warm colors such as red or yellow, blue has the ability to create vibrant, high-impact designs – the color scheme is also a corner-stone of Carny Style and has often appeared in circus related artwork.  Vivid shades such as indigo or azure reveals qualities of luxury within one’s character, and perhaps even a touch of superiority.  Though navy is nearly black, when combined with a lighter shade it can transmit trust and truthfulness.  Patel blues, particularly when the are worn alongside pale yellow and light pinks, gives the suggestion of Springtime, while deeper blues are considered Winter colors.  For a natural, watery palette one can mix blues and green; add grey for minimized nobility and light brown, tans or beige for more organic combinations.  When blue is paired with white it instantly incites nautical themes, or you can create a conservative yet sophisticated look with subtle contrast by coordinating light and dark shades.  No matter what your taste is, do it with style and confidence!

Kung-Fu Shoes: Queen Green

Prominent among the sprawling landscapes that Nature has gifted us, green denotes evolution and regeneration – on the negative side, it is also indicative of jealousy and inexperience – and can produce a warming or cooling response.  The color green also represents a balanced composition of stability, where several shades give a novel Springtime vibe, while drab tones are ideal when one desires to pick up on military overtones for a style.  When paired with beige, brown or tan, the color emotes an elemental feeling, though when contrasted with purple, gives an immediate high-impact and lively sensibility.  Combining green with yellow and black or white is suggested for those who are a bit more brazen with their fashion.  The more natural shades such as forest and lime green are viewed as comforting and exhilarating, with an organic blend of blue [cool] and yellow [warm] undertones.

In several religions, green is associated with: resurrection, regeneration, the color of love affiliated with Venus and Aphrodite, the Celtic God of fertility, the altar cloth for the Catholic church’s Sunday service and represents Irish-Catholics.  Wearing darker greens will let others know that you are conventional, steadfast and informed, but the bright greens shout modern, peculiar and animated – though none of those things are exactly negative, just be aware of what message your shoes are sending before selecting them.  Of course that is where this week’s style guide comes in handy as it navigates through a selection of styles that will certainly stir up feelings of jealousy from those who will secretly coveting your seductive footwear.

A classic staple for an elegant wardrobe are satin dress shoes, and the curves of these Evelixa pumps are accented with a ruffled overlay around the peep toe and a foiled silver lining that wraps around a cushioned bed.

It is not often that an item is elected into the exclusive aristocratic category, but one also cannot deny that Pleaser certainly has Prestige when it comes to sumptuous pumps, particularly a green satin platform heel that has been decked out with iridescent rhinestones, ideal for that vampy new burlesque act you have been working on.

The simplicity of Pleaser‘s Teeze design is amplified by a lime green satin base and covered with a layer of black lace.  Flaunt your effervescent side by wearing them with some back-seamed fishnets and the leg-baring Tiki Slit Dress by Sourpuss - coordinating tiki drink is optional.

As mentioned earlier, green and black make a strong paring and T.U.K. shows us why with these amazingly chunky platforms.  The black sole and heel have hidden accents, though the combination is made more apparent with a bright green upper that is patterned with hearts, while three buckled straps cris cross their way over the toe and heel.

Funtasma heels are a creative blend of black patent vinyl accents interjected by swaths of green glitter and accented by a matching vinyl bow, five faceted buttons on a green glitter strap, and silver buckle that secures the black vinyl strap around your ankles.

If compelling compositions are more your speed, there are quite a few Iron Fist shoes that should quench such a discernible palate.  For instance,  their Green Monster heels have a cacophony of twisted images on the toes, while the interior is offset by black and white stripes.

Reign over the bourgeois and infect them with Jungle Fever, a frenzied lime peep toe pump enthusiastically embossed with thick black leopard spots that can send the dance floor into a frenzy the moment you set foot on it.

The black satin roses and skull print prevents the contrasting purple accents from making the Mombassa wedges into a visual nightmare, though they should certainly be the main focal point of an outfit, and try to avoid too many coordinating accessories if you are not aiming for a kitschy look.

Disembodied eyeballs may have been making their rounds among alternative fashion to the point where they are a bit over-played, but the Oh No platform peep toe pump also features tentacles and spatters that manage to make it standout among similar styles.

Venturing into a more black-based territory is the sadly discontinued Dead Phones design, which features adorable rouched bows on elastic straps and a neon slime skull tangled up in bright pink wires.  The detailing on the interior is just as intense, and the shock of lime at the bottom of the heel is definitely a sharp way to bring the toxic tone of the skull into a different part of the shoe.

On the other side of the spectrum are these adorable peep toe pumps that are lined with white piping that really brings out the freshness of pea green – the stark white heels suggest sophistication while the green and white bows keep the style chic and youthful.

It was difficult to select just one of these cyber inspired platforms, not so much because I am so head-over-heels for the designs that I want to buy or wear them, but rather due to the fact each one has a significant difference which sets it apart from other such styles.  Then again, Pleaser makes it easy to Adore six and a half inches of black platform heel, while a trio of neon green UV reactive tubes dart across the sole and the foot is exposed under a clear vinyl upper.  If the idea of balancing precariously on top of stilettos is not within your comfort zone, Beau is a lovely black platform wedge sandal that stacks those acidic-looking tubes up the heel.  However, if you have command of towering shoes, then the aptly named Flamingo is for you – it is an eight inch platform sandal with four rows of that UV green tubing, a spiral of it slipping up the heel for a dizzying effect.  A simpler slip on peep toe design has three strands of tubing twisted between the platform and heel for a black light delight!

Would highly suggest wearing any of these with items from Lip Service‘s upcoming Quarantine line, which features a toxic green gas mask screen print, black and green vinyl with black mesh overlay, and cyber punk style tubes.  Bonus points if you manage to match your hair and makeup without being a neon nightmare.

Green has been recognized as a symbol of fertility for many centuries, and its meanings has evolved in American culture to express a mood of heightened sexuality.  It was a sacred color to the Egyptians, embodying the ambition and elation of Spring, and is said to be a comfortable color to the eye.  There are even claims that it has considerable potential to effectively soothe pain.  Circus and traveling showmen in Australia consider green to be bad luck, though that might have something to do with the fact that a “greenhorn” is someone with little to no experience yet can are eager and abundant.  However, a shamrock is considered to be good luck in most Western cultures, and there are more shades of green than any other color.  The meaning that it holds comes from the person wearing it, and there is sufficient evidence in this article which suggests that a pair of emerald slippers may be just the thing one needs for an extra boost of empowerment.

Kung-Fu Shoes: Zany Zebra

One of the main benefits to wearing animal prints is that they are usually a relevant style and can easily transform an outfit from boring to daring.  Zebras may not be the most majestic of creatures but it certainly asserts an interesting aesthetic with inherited stripes that are angled on its body and accentuate its curves.  Translating such an intriguing pattern into fashion means there will be a vast spectrum of cheap hooker heels to powerful pumps that can only be described as jungle couture.  The difference comes not only from the quality of the shoe, but also the attitude of the person wearing them – a negative tone can easily overwhelm any carefully constructed outfit and will translate to a sense of insecurity if one depends on clothes to generate their characteristics.

As an artist, I may not always dress the way I would like to because there are other responsibilities that come before expanding my wardrobe, yet I still find ways to incorporate various inspirations into the way I present myself.  It is a bit ridiculous but necessary to recognize that I have to represent a specific quality that is indicative of who I am and do so in a manner which others can pick up on.  It is not something that can be taught and comes with all the many years of experience I have interacting with other performers, audience members and generally curious random people on the street.  What makes them want to strike up a conversation, no matter how brief the interaction, is secondary to the fact that they were inclined to do so in the first place.  Taking all of this into consideration and combining it with the theme of this week’s ode to awesome shoes, it is perfectly acceptable to take a risk in fashion for the sake of expressing parts of yourself that could benefit from the exposure.

Part of T.U.K.’s Notorious collection, these fierce heels have a sleek red and black zebra print, crossed ankle straps punched with grommets and an all black heel.  There are also grommet details on the upper heel and a star charm that hangs from the buckle of the ankle straps.

The subtle orange tone of these suede zebra print pumps are nicely accented with a black heel that even sneaks up the back, where wild meets elegant with a simplicity that makes these ideal for casual wear with a pair of dark blue jeans.

Citrus sparkle and a satin lining keep these zebra print stilettos from being too tacky, which is definitely something to avoid when putting together a stunning outfit.  Kitschy might be keen and all, yet there is certainly a limit to what is in good taste and this particular pair of pumps would be lovely with a tiki ensemble.

Accenting a bold print with a bright color, as seen here with Lower East Side’s Fiona Flat, is a simple way of bringing out your wild side without shouting it across rooftops.  Made from faux leather, the trendy round toed flat is trimmed with a soft neon green and matching bow, manufactured to be flexible and comfortable.

Zebra print does not have to be limited to pairing colors with black – the teal in these Sugarfree pumps are a nice tonal contrast that sets of the round toe and concealed platform of the leather look stiletto.

Colors that are deep yet rich are always favored for having that royal flair, and the Kora by Michael Antonio is an beautiful example of how blue zebra print can really set of the platform peep toe pump – the zipper detail on the upper part of the heel is a nice little bonus as well.

Fuzzy zebra print stilettos might seem a bit intimidating, particularly if they give one the feeling they are some sort of space pimp, but I can assure you that they are have practical applications in an outfit and can really set off a figure flattering black dress.

There are certainly limits to mixing animal prints, because being a clusterfuck train wreck that is a visual assault should be left to professional knuckleheads who can afford to look like walking fashion nightmares.  The rest of us can rock Iron Fist’s One Hand In The Grave wedges, the chunky black and grey zebra print accented with lime piping and lined with coordinating leopard print.

Stand out from the rest of the back with Iron Fist‘s graphically gorgeous Zebracorn stilettos.  The psychedelic colors of this zebra print peep toe pump carries a surprise in the lining in the form of illustrations that depict the rebellious and mythical creature for which these shoes have been named.

Gold is definitely a dominant color that can be seen just about everywhere in Summer fashion from face framing earrings to shimmering makeup, so why not incite a bit of Vertigo with these T.U.K. platform heels.  The twisting zebra stripes and ankle straps are a delightful design that will draw the eyes in before guiding them up to the rest of your outfit.

Demonia is well known for taking classic shapes and adding their signature touch to create shoes suitable to numerous alternative subcultures.  Here they have taken a Mary Jane wedge, wrapped it in glittering white and black zebra print, then embellished it with buckled bondage straps.

If you find the idea of going on a surfing Safari appealing, the white and black pleated velvet of these Pleaser pumps are certain to assert yourself as queen of the Summer, a title earned after successfully defeating the meager competition.

Fashion does not have to be boring or even restricting, because in the end clothes are just that and it does not matter who wants to wear what.  While society would like us to believe that people can be whittled down to categories depending on their body size, an individual is worth so much more than the numbers on the labels of clothes and shoes.   They do not define us any more than the garments themselves, and though they are certainly perceived as a reflection of one’s personality, it is that very thing which others are quick to judge.  Yet life is too short and there are plenty of other hobbies that can be much more fulfilling, so think about that the next time you might want to criticize someone’s choice of expression.  Fashion is supposed to be fun and embrace all, not be another platform for useless competition.  Leave that for ridiculous reality shows and tabloid gossip – you will be far too busy drinking cocktails and taking compliments on your zebra print pumps.

Kung-Fu Shoes: Mellow Yellow

Possibly the most difficult to wear of all the shoe colors because of the tendency to look like one is wearing bananas on the feet as opposed to fashionable footwear.  How does one even go about coordinating yellow with an outfit?  Believe it or not, certain hues of purple match quite well, throw in a couple of neutrals with a few statement jewelry pieces and call it fierce.  This golden color represents sunshine because it is a warm color, denotes happiness and joy, creates excitement and can suggest freshness.  Pair it with red for a hot mix, orange to generate a Summery theme or contrast it with an eye-popping blue.  Utilize a paler shade to compliment darker, richer tone or mix with grey and a dash of black for a high-tech look.  The point is to feel confident about yourself, and if you feel like expressing that can be done in a pair of bright yellow patent stiletto heels, go on and make the statement without a single question.

There is no pretending that the yellow and black stripes of this platform Mary Jane by Pleaser is not directly inspired by the Bumble Bee, but that just gives you an excuse to act like the Queen when you buzz around the dance floor.  Perhaps they might be most appropriate for Halloween, but they could also be a great addition to a halterneck dress as well.

These yellow and black platform wedges by Prada have an intriguing design that seems to be on trend for Summer shoes.  Wear them with a flowing sundress or a flattering skirt and peasant blouse.

When consuming drinks that taste like tropical fruit yet have a distinguished hint of alcohol, rock out to your favorite tunes in a pair of Iron Fist’s Polka Party Flats to maximize dancing ability.  Let’s face it, the more that weird guy in the corner stares at you, the more your drink tastes like rum and you are talking like a pirate, which is fitting for someone wearing shoes decorated in skulls and anchors.

There are quite a number of styles that are new in fashion, and Suebee by Jeffrey Campbell is certainly at the forefront of the ‘flatform’.  This shoe combines pieces of a maryjane with a flat platform which comes off as sophisticated and can be worn with shorts, denim or day dresses.

Whether one loves them or hates them, there is no denying the popularity of Jeffrey Cambell’s Lita – the design may seem clunky to some but I prefer a thick, sturdy heel over those that appear as though they might snap at any second.  This particular model towns down the yellow to a nice dusky mustard shade, then pairs it with a bright navy blue and light forest green that open up a lot of options when adding it to an outfit.

There are memories I have of going to Saint Mark’s Place in New York City with my best friend, because we liked to window shop and laugh at the people who were too far up themselves to return a friendly smile.  There were, however, some really awesome individuals at a few of the stores who made the visits worthwhile.  One of those frequented boutiques is the infamous Trash and Vaudeville, which has an entire room dedicated to shoes, and I can totally see these Demonia creepers sitting among their other fantastic footwear.

Trimming soft yellow stiletto pumps with bows and precision black work gives them a retro feel while still creating a vibe of elegance.  They are the type of shoe you could wear while antique shopping and suddenly you find yourself having dinner with a charming stranger.

Vivienne Westwood is an icon of alternative fashion most well known for helping create the punk aesthetic of the 70s and 80s, and these Melissa Dragon shoes are an intensely hued jelly sling back heel with peep toe.  The designer’s signature and brand can be found scripted on the interior, while a jet black heart detail really sets off the color and would look darling with a baby doll dress.

What’s black, white and yellow all over?  No, it’s not a canary in a prisoner uniform, but rather Kate Spade’s Karolina.  This luxe patent leather pump is sleek and sophisticated, so it can be worn at the office with tailored trousers, blouse and blazer, or to your friend’s cocktail party.  If the price is too far out of your range, break out the art skills and DIY a pair.

Yellow does not always have to completely dominate a shoe – it can also act as background to a coordinating pattern that might make you forget you are even wearing the color, as seen by these round toe yellow floral patent pumps.

Channel your inner retrofuturistic cyberpunk pinup with these gleaming Sasha Platform Wedge Boots.  The body is made from a creamy leatherette stacked on top of five and a half inches of platform wedges that have been studded with silver thumbtacks.  If there is still too much yellow for your taste, they would also make a great canvas for some custom hand painted artwork.

When the concept of clothing featuring real tattoo designs was first introduced, it seemed like a good idea to integrate the culture into mainstream fashion.  Unfortunately it got to a level of ridiculous that irritated those of us who have dedicated decent amounts of skin space to permanent art.  However, that does not mean it has to be forever ruined, and the Joyaus platform wedge is an indication not everything from this line is a clusterfuck of ugly.  The yellow canvas is decorated with pink flowers, red and silver rhinestones, Ed Hardy’s signature, and the image of a woman is printed on the heel.

Fashion does not always have to be serious, and as this guide demonstrates, it is totally cool to wear a color that might not be seen often.  Personal style is one that is created by ideas of what you find appealing without worrying if it is trendy or not.  Allowing such silly notions to dictate what you wear comes across as extremely fake and gives the impression of a forced appearance.  Labels are often thrown around for the sake of assisting the reader in finding what works best for them – in the end the choice is yours and no matter what you select to wear, do it with the confidence that you are fabulous.
