Bronze Belle

Traditionally the hues associated with Winter fall within scathing silvers, blistering blues and whites bright enough to make your eyes wither, though one will also find an assortment of smokey grays and black alongside muted neutrals, all of which carry enough shimmer to keep rogue pieces of glitter floating around your house well into Spring.  Glistening eyes are amplified with soft yet thick black lashes, rosy cheeks, satin lips and a warm glow that will light up your face like an inviting fire.  While perpetuating the Ice Queen trope can mean roaming into whimsical territory, where ornaments meant for decorating trees are fixed atop the head, garments flutter in gossamer layers and pristine faux fur wraps you up nice and tight to protect you from bitter Winter winds, indulging fantasies can certainly be a fun way to spend a chilly afternoon.  Much like the seasons themselves, though, trends change and something new takes reign as you dream of dashing through the snow.

1 – It should go without saying that prior to ritual face painting that one gently cleanse the skin, then apply moisturizer, foundation and concealer where needed.  After a quick dusting of face powder and a healthy dose of primer, accentuate eyes with Bronx by Illamasqua, a pale bronze gold Powder Eye Shadow that is highly pigmented and offers a shimmer finish.

2 – Those familiar with Urban Decay will be delighted at the enhancements of their legendary Eyeshadow, as it provides dense, decadent color with uniform pigment distribution that lasts longer and is crease-resistant.  The insane payout of Baked bronze glides on effortlessly with a velvety texture and is full of shimmer that won’t fall all over your face, but instead hang onto your lids all night long

3 – Bring an end to basic black when seeking to shape smoldering eyes and treat yourself to the rich russet of Ore, a Pure Pigment from Illamasqua that distributes a polished pure-color powder to highlight cheeks, eyes and brows.  Though it tends to have a powerful effect on its own, convey your courageous character by mixing it with your favorite shadows and blushes.

4 – Whether you choose to use it sparingly in precise lines and dots that curve with the anatomy of your face, or spread it across specific features with your fingers as a rural warrior ready to face the concrete jungle, Liquid Metal will bathe you in the limelight.  Enrapture is a rich cream saturated with a bright molten hue that is going to seize the interest of those who pass you by.

5 – Hailed as an iconic innovation, the NARS Multiple is another product that has more than one use, the rich bronze of Palm Beach melding effortlessly on eyelids, cheeks, lips and other parts of the body.  It can produce gleaming highlights, accents or contours on all skin tones, and the unique creamy formula enriched with Vitamin E leaves a sheer, natural finish everywhere it is applied.

6 – Though I recently wrote a beauty guide influenced by shimmering shades of topaz, the browner tones in this Satin Lipstick coordinates more with the ambiance presented here.  Bilbao is a more sophisticated shade which also offers hydration and protection for lips, making it comfortable to wear.

7 – For a statuesque appearance that seems as though it was carved from a lifeless hunk of metal, treat yourself to Gilded, a shimmering beacon of bronze packed with veins of gold which will give you gracefully sun-kissed skin without the risk of cancer or premature aging.  In other words, skip the lotions, spray tans and hours of sitting in the sun to get baked with this Bronzer instead.

8 – Continuing on the theme of being Baked, simple eyes can be undoubtedly augmented with strokes of bold bronze glitter in the form of Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner by Urban Decay.  This striking shade is suspended in a clear base, a tiny brush allowing you to meticulously paint thin lines or use the side and sweep it across skin for a jewel-encrusted look.

9 – Advertised as a Cult Classic, Lovejoy is a shimmering bronzed rose Blush composed of micronized powder to guarantee a gentle fusion between your face and the makeup.  Decide whether you prefer a muted or intense application, as either one will invigorate the complexion with a natural flush.

10 – Winding through the  towering pine trees one late afternoon, crisp blue sky above and hot breath visible in the thin air, a Desperado makes their way deeper into the comfort of the woods in an effort to escape the chaos of the city.  Shack up for hibernation in style by giving yourself a manicure with Shimmer Nail Polish by NARS that has an antique touch.  The fashion-forward shade is formulated to provide UV protection that prevents discoloration, a durable, chip-resistant finish and prolonged wear.

As someone who has been getting professional piercings for over a decade now, I am always intrigued by the constant parade of body jewelry which goes beyond the stale standards that have been seen and offer little expression of individuality.  After my set of bottom lip piercings, my septum is the second hole I had put in my face and therefore also one of the piercings I have had the longest.  Initially it was done with a stainless steel captive ring, the bead of which held a shimmering red gem.  Having such a prominent piece on my face when I was 18 garnered a lot of attention [both positive and negative] that caused me to seek out stories of others and their experiences.  The point is that now I barely ever remember I have the piercing, though well aware of the stainless steel seamless ring that currently occupies the hole in my septum.

Over the past several months I have been seeing a lot of beautiful jewelry come across my Tumblr dashboard, and as a result I swoon, sigh then solemnly swear that I will some day own a statement septum piece.  The concept of wearing jewelry on my body has become foreign to me, even if I can be found adorned in an extra accessory or two aside from the metal that has pretty much become a permanent part of my flesh.  It makes more sense to me, though buying jewels that I can wear in my face might be seen as extravagant, but I could say the same about what others choose to spend their money on.  Investing in my modifications with an understanding of the long-term value of them is something that I enjoy and there is a sense of pride in doing so.

Having said all that, these stunning pieces discovered on Body Vision, a Los Angeles based company that manufactures wholesale body jewelry and distributes it through various tattoo and piercing shops, really captured my attention.  Though they are not made of bronze, the pieces presented are for artistic purposes as a suggestion to coordinate with the makeup above.

1 – Boston Tiger: rose gold, champagne cubic zirconia and a genuine white opal pear.

2 – Inara: yellow gold beaded septum crescent pave set with 1.25mm diamonds.

3 – Dire Straights: delicately draped 14k yellow gold box chain.

4 – Double Dahlia: yellow gold seam ring featuring two layers of 1mm gems.

5 – the Rose: yellow gold nostril screws with thirteen gems in a cluster.
