A three part series filled with personal writings that detail experiences riding the Cyclone and Wonder Wheel, attending sideshow and burlesque events, eating Nathan’s hot dogs and spending endless hours on the beach of Coney Island. There was a moment of my life when I lived eighteen miles from the Island, which made visiting its infamous amusement area something that happened quite frequently. The feelings that filled me from just being there are still hard to explain, as knowing that you are a part of history as you see, smell and touch things that so many hundreds of millions have done before can be a bit overwhelming. This is the place where I truly fell in love, learned my sideshow skills and became attached to its history on so many levels, all of which I thoughtfully captured in rambling words scribbled in a journal. Carrying some sort of pad and writing device became crucial to my documentation of life because interesting things kept happening and I didn’t want to forget them.
These cherished memories are laid out in three black and white 4″x5″ magazines, where each of the cover images depict one of the three amusement parks that made Coney Island legendary: Steeplechase, Luna and Dreamland. A collage of images from each of them have been placed in the center of each magazine as a keepsake, and each issue is hand numbered to give it that extra DIY touch. While photos that accompany the articles may be lacking in color, the words certainly do their job of painting a vivid picture for the reader as they escape into another world. The third issue also contains a bonus article that is a part of the Tales From the Road series, which are stories about my time traveling the carnival circuit with a 10-in-1 sideshow.
