Ritzy Ruby

The exceptional hardness of a ruby is surpassed only by a diamond, making it one of the elite precious gems which are not only used in presenting you pride for a July birthday but also revered for their valued beauty.  Characteristic colors and quality varies depending on the geographical source; a fine, deep, clear red in Burma; a dark red to brown tint in Burma; medium light tones in Sri Lanka and small, sheet like purple hued stones in Africa.  Durable for every day wear, rubies symbolize intelligence, prosperity and generosity, radiating a strong sense of vitality where feelings of passion are unashamedly incited.  A phenomenon caused by very fine needles of rutile inside a ruby give it a ‘silky’ shine, and rarely they can form a star-shaped deposit that would be highly visible should this kind of stone were to be cut as a half-dome cabochon.  While derived from the Latin word rubens, which literally means ‘red’, the color of a ruby is far more warm and fiery, an undiluted, hot and passionate tone that is unrelenting in saturation.  Though certainly the most important feature, transparency matters just as much and inclusions that do not impair the quality are viewed as a fingerprint defining a ruby as genuine.  No matter how you choose to display it, be confident that you are just as rare and radiant as the characteristics of this ‘king of gemstones’!

Pearls can be found in the waters of place such as the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Mannar, the South Pacific, the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Coast of Mexico, Europe, Japan and Australia, produced by calcium carbonate that resides in the soft tissue of a shelled mollusc.  These spherical wonders come in a wide range of iridescent shades: black, blue, gold, green, pink, cream, silver or white – the lighter tones will be the main focus of this guide.  Originating from the Latin word “pirum” which translates to “pear” and indicates the shape of the gem, a decently sized pearl can take between five and eight years to grow.  Value is determined based on the coating known as “nacre” that gives the pearl its lustrous appearance, though color, size, lack of surface flaws and symmetry appropriate for the type are attributes also taken under consideration.  When combined, these requirements ensure that precious pearls are recognized as such, though one certainly does not have to wait for the right one to be discovered in order to reap the benefits of their beauty.

Dazzled Emerald

A gem beloved by Cleopatra and dedicated to the goddess Venus by ancient Romans, the emerald has long been connected to fruitfulness, revival and  passion.  Contemporary jewelry fans use it to signify devotion and companionship, believed to contain effective healing powers relating to issues with  eyes, the spine, headaches and fertility.  Originating from the Greek word “smaragdos” which translates to “green stone”, the emerald is well-known for its rich color and is the most valuable gemstone in the world by weight.  A member of the Beryl family, the gem generates its green hues from elements of chromium that are contained in the crystals.  In Victorian times, it was customary to wear jewelry decorated with emeralds to represent the rebirth of nature, the deep green a reflection of the plant life that returned each spring.  Though almost all of them have small imperfections, they are seen as part of the character rather than something negative, which is a reminder to embraces flaws rather than trying to hide them.  Emerald has also been elected color of the year, appearing in garment form on celebrities during red carpet events, being promoted by alternative models wearing it in their hair, and comes in many variations of cosmetics one can use to create their own trendy beauty looks.

Keen On Aquamarine

Derived from the Latin words “aqua marina”, which translates to “sea water” and is indicative of this gemstone’s color, the aquamarine is a member of the Beryl family and can be found in Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar and the Ukraine.  As the birthstone of March and those born under the sign of Pisces, aquamarine is symbolic of bravery, fidelity and friendship, while reports also suggest it can be used to treat throat problems and stress-related illnesses.  The serene color of this gem is said to calm tempers, allowing those who wear it to channel calmness and remain levelheaded in any situation, while the pale hue is one that compliments Spring and Summer wardrobes.  Believed to protect sailors and ensure they had a safe voyage while navigating dangerous oceans, it is ideal to incorporate aquamarine into looks that have a nautical theme to them.

Amazing Amethyst

Connected to wisdom and mysticism alike, amethyst is the birthstone of February and Zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces.  This gem is the purple variety of mineral quartz, and though there is a wide range of shades, the richer colors are considered to be more valuable.  The name itself is derived from the Greek word amethystos which means means “remedy against drunkeness”, perhaps due to a belief amethyst could ward off the effect of alcohol.  Cut gems are graded using the terms Siberian, Uruguayan or Bahain to represent high, medium and low regardless of the source.  Since purple is traditionally a royal color, amethyst has been used since the dawn of history to adorn the rich, powerful monarchs and rulers.  Other symbolism and meaning attached to this jewel include loyalty, humbleness, individuality and originality, while it is said to hold healing properties effective for treating headaches, insomnia, arthritis and circulatory issues as well as being general pain relief.  An amethyst is also known as the “sober stone”, as it is believed to treat various types of addictions.  No matter what your reason for wanting to radiate with the essence of the gem’s significance, use this guide project balance, peace and inner strength.

Though by now this portion of the guide does not need an actual introduction, I always feel the need to give credit where it is due, especially when it comes to creating custom body jewelry.  The names that have become synonymous with breathtaking and brilliant constantly produce nothing but the best in cutting edge designs, many of which sparkle with cut gems.  Iridescent hues are anodized onto titanium which expand the range of eyelets and other pieces that were once only offered in stale stainless steel.  While there is nothing inherently wrong with wearing such jewelry, I am constantly on the lookout for the newest items to satiate my evolving aesthetics and offer them here for those who may share them.

1 –  Two rows of gems are always better than one, as seen here on Anatometal’s titanium 1″ Super Orbit Eyelets that have an exterior row of synthetic amethyst, while cubic zirconia gems float around the middle portion.

Garnet Incarnate

Selected as an ideal gem in Victorian jewelry, the hue conventionally associated with garnet is a deep red that also has significance in the social, religious and biblical aspects of Christianity.  Fire is often symbolized by this color as well, while the word itself is derived from the Greek word “granatum”; translated it means “pomegranate seeds”, which the shape and shade of the crystals imitates.  The stone is indicative of those born in the month of January or under the sign of Capricorn, and since the latter applies to me I am certainly particular to this color when it comes to makeup.  It can represent authority, prominence, clarity, veracity, authenticity and devotion, all of which are qualities that signifies the wearer can be depended upon for fidelity and true friendship.  Only pure crystals of garnet, found in Africa, Brazil, India, Malaya, Sri Lanka, Uruguay and the United States, are used as gemstones that are one of the following types: almandine, andradite, demantoid, grossularite, pyrope, spessarite and uvarovite.  These structures can be Isometric, rhombic and dodecahedron, while the stone itself is believed to hold effective healing properties such as regeneration or removing negativity and is also used to enhance sensuality and sexuality.  Readers are encouraged to believe what they want while browsing the products in this guide that will assist in using this inspiration to create stunning looks.

9 – Stash your favorite beauty items or even your shopping money in this darling Swirl Embroidery Bag from Dezigner Bliss, lined with satin to ensure all valuables remain safe while traveling in your purse.

Of course having  several facial piercings and generally being a fan of body jewelry decked out in glistening gems, I am inclined to include a small sampling of offerings from prominent companies.  When I first had my septum pierced, the captive ring I selected happened to have a red rhinestone set in the middle of the bead and it was my prized piece for a long time.  Something about that pop of color set against the steel and pale skin tone gave me an imperial feeling, which is something I continually seek to capture with my personal aesthetic.

1 – When it comes to spoiling oneself with opulence, Anatometal is pretty much synonymous with hedonism and never disappoints with their wide range of eyelets [or tunnels if you prefer that nomenclature] that are decked out in dazzling jewels.  This pair of titanium anodized bronze Gemmed Eyelets have alternating genuine black onyx and synthetic garnet that happily dance along the diameter of the flares.

2 – Tired of the same old steel threaded ends?  Anatometal has the solution – blue titanium flowers spangled with white rhinestones and deep toned garnets.  They can be used on any internally threaded jewelry and are a great way to add a unique flair to your favorite piercing.

3 – Part of the Paloma Collection by Body Vision Los Angeles, this Gold Curved Barbell features twenty eight 1.2mm genuine diamonds and two 2.75mm garnets, with one disc connected to the bar while the other gently dangles from it by way of a golden jump ring.  Toss out that tacky mall jewelry that likely isn’t real gold anyway and pick up one of these beauties instead.

4 – Even a simple 14ga prong set garnet as a threaded end is more visually appealing than the generic balls, spikes and other cheap alternatives that are offered a dime a dozen on sites where jewelry is mass produced and questionable in quality.  These companies have the reputation they do because they consistently offer nothing but the best, and really, isn’t that worth investing in?

5 – To me Limelight is the grown up version of my first septum piece; the snap ring is composed of yellow gold while a 2mm princess cut garnet is flanked by a pair of 1.5mm Bezels.  Though I would not wear it all the time, I certainly would not hesitate to show it off either.

6 – BVLA also has stunning flowers, though these Cherry Blossom nose studs are made from yellow gold with 1.5mm petals and 2mm center, seen here in faceted synthetic white opals and garnet on the left, and opaque synthetic CZ paired with Rhoadlite garnet on the right.

7 – Eyelets certainly do not need to be huge in order to hold effervescence, as is demonstrated by this set of 6ga stainless steel Gemmed Eyelets, decorated in synthetic garnet, tangerine and citrine gems.

8 – To be honest I am a bit disappointed at the lack of blinged out labret jewelry, but thankfully BVLA has the Cinq Bead, a 14k gold piece that has five tiny stainless steel beads surrounding a beautiful and deeply colored garnet Bezel.

9 – Last but certainly not least, stainless steel 5/8″ Super Teardrop Eyelets by Anatometal that have mint green CZ, synthetic garnet, synthetic ruby, pink CZ and synthetic opal to enhance the intriguing shape.

Bronze Belle

Traditionally the hues associated with Winter fall within scathing silvers, blistering blues and whites bright enough to make your eyes wither, though one will also find an assortment of smokey grays and black alongside muted neutrals, all of which carry enough shimmer to keep rogue pieces of glitter floating around your house well into Spring.  Glistening eyes are amplified with soft yet thick black lashes, rosy cheeks, satin lips and a warm glow that will light up your face like an inviting fire.  While perpetuating the Ice Queen trope can mean roaming into whimsical territory, where ornaments meant for decorating trees are fixed atop the head, garments flutter in gossamer layers and pristine faux fur wraps you up nice and tight to protect you from bitter Winter winds, indulging fantasies can certainly be a fun way to spend a chilly afternoon.  Much like the seasons themselves, though, trends change and something new takes reign as you dream of dashing through the snow.

1 – It should go without saying that prior to ritual face painting that one gently cleanse the skin, then apply moisturizer, foundation and concealer where needed.  After a quick dusting of face powder and a healthy dose of primer, accentuate eyes with Bronx by Illamasqua, a pale bronze gold Powder Eye Shadow that is highly pigmented and offers a shimmer finish.

2 – Those familiar with Urban Decay will be delighted at the enhancements of their legendary Eyeshadow, as it provides dense, decadent color with uniform pigment distribution that lasts longer and is crease-resistant.  The insane payout of Baked bronze glides on effortlessly with a velvety texture and is full of shimmer that won’t fall all over your face, but instead hang onto your lids all night long

3 – Bring an end to basic black when seeking to shape smoldering eyes and treat yourself to the rich russet of Ore, a Pure Pigment from Illamasqua that distributes a polished pure-color powder to highlight cheeks, eyes and brows.  Though it tends to have a powerful effect on its own, convey your courageous character by mixing it with your favorite shadows and blushes.

4 – Whether you choose to use it sparingly in precise lines and dots that curve with the anatomy of your face, or spread it across specific features with your fingers as a rural warrior ready to face the concrete jungle, Liquid Metal will bathe you in the limelight.  Enrapture is a rich cream saturated with a bright molten hue that is going to seize the interest of those who pass you by.

5 – Hailed as an iconic innovation, the NARS Multiple is another product that has more than one use, the rich bronze of Palm Beach melding effortlessly on eyelids, cheeks, lips and other parts of the body.  It can produce gleaming highlights, accents or contours on all skin tones, and the unique creamy formula enriched with Vitamin E leaves a sheer, natural finish everywhere it is applied.

6 – Though I recently wrote a beauty guide influenced by shimmering shades of topaz, the browner tones in this Satin Lipstick coordinates more with the ambiance presented here.  Bilbao is a more sophisticated shade which also offers hydration and protection for lips, making it comfortable to wear.

7 – For a statuesque appearance that seems as though it was carved from a lifeless hunk of metal, treat yourself to Gilded, a shimmering beacon of bronze packed with veins of gold which will give you gracefully sun-kissed skin without the risk of cancer or premature aging.  In other words, skip the lotions, spray tans and hours of sitting in the sun to get baked with this Bronzer instead.

8 – Continuing on the theme of being Baked, simple eyes can be undoubtedly augmented with strokes of bold bronze glitter in the form of Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner by Urban Decay.  This striking shade is suspended in a clear base, a tiny brush allowing you to meticulously paint thin lines or use the side and sweep it across skin for a jewel-encrusted look.

9 – Advertised as a Cult Classic, Lovejoy is a shimmering bronzed rose Blush composed of micronized powder to guarantee a gentle fusion between your face and the makeup.  Decide whether you prefer a muted or intense application, as either one will invigorate the complexion with a natural flush.

10 – Winding through the  towering pine trees one late afternoon, crisp blue sky above and hot breath visible in the thin air, a Desperado makes their way deeper into the comfort of the woods in an effort to escape the chaos of the city.  Shack up for hibernation in style by giving yourself a manicure with Shimmer Nail Polish by NARS that has an antique touch.  The fashion-forward shade is formulated to provide UV protection that prevents discoloration, a durable, chip-resistant finish and prolonged wear.

As someone who has been getting professional piercings for over a decade now, I am always intrigued by the constant parade of body jewelry which goes beyond the stale standards that have been seen and offer little expression of individuality.  After my set of bottom lip piercings, my septum is the second hole I had put in my face and therefore also one of the piercings I have had the longest.  Initially it was done with a stainless steel captive ring, the bead of which held a shimmering red gem.  Having such a prominent piece on my face when I was 18 garnered a lot of attention [both positive and negative] that caused me to seek out stories of others and their experiences.  The point is that now I barely ever remember I have the piercing, though well aware of the stainless steel seamless ring that currently occupies the hole in my septum.

Over the past several months I have been seeing a lot of beautiful jewelry come across my Tumblr dashboard, and as a result I swoon, sigh then solemnly swear that I will some day own a statement septum piece.  The concept of wearing jewelry on my body has become foreign to me, even if I can be found adorned in an extra accessory or two aside from the metal that has pretty much become a permanent part of my flesh.  It makes more sense to me, though buying jewels that I can wear in my face might be seen as extravagant, but I could say the same about what others choose to spend their money on.  Investing in my modifications with an understanding of the long-term value of them is something that I enjoy and there is a sense of pride in doing so.

Having said all that, these stunning pieces discovered on Body Vision, a Los Angeles based company that manufactures wholesale body jewelry and distributes it through various tattoo and piercing shops, really captured my attention.  Though they are not made of bronze, the pieces presented are for artistic purposes as a suggestion to coordinate with the makeup above.

1 – Boston Tiger: rose gold, champagne cubic zirconia and a genuine white opal pear.

2 – Inara: yellow gold beaded septum crescent pave set with 1.25mm diamonds.

3 – Dire Straights: delicately draped 14k yellow gold box chain.

4 – Double Dahlia: yellow gold seam ring featuring two layers of 1mm gems.

5 – the Rose: yellow gold nostril screws with thirteen gems in a cluster.
